I made a conscious decision to improve my presentation this year, therefore i spent the longest i've ever spent on presentation. I hate leaving a design which im not entirely happy with for this but i've come to learn that sometimes one brilliant key image can sell the crappiest of schemes.
The main problem with the site being a market, i.e essentially a pedestrian area is that it is completely segregated from any main pedestrian routes by the main riverside road. This would seriously inhibit the use of this area. My solution to this was a marriage between pedestrian and vehicular movement and also to intice a more leisurely, passive use of the vehicle. The actual covered market space simply covers an existing route to the riverside walk. From the entrance of the market the stage/cinema which cantilevers over the water can be seen and invites people to venture through the market. From the market you can either move directly through to the riverside walk or you can take steps to the west to a raised outdoor area, the bars and coffee shops can open out onto this are for business. As it is west facing this area is designed to be used in the evening to utilise and catch the low evening sun. On top of the bars and coffee shops is a flat green roof overlooking this area which can also be used as a leisurely zone which offers a different, elevated aspect of the river and also a viewing platform of the stage/cinema.The viewing level for the cinema is raised again by three steps, partially to allow adequate sight lines to the cinema, to allow for a stepped seating area along the riverside walk and to define it as a parking area during the day. The overall height difference between the existing level is no more than 1m.Tuesday, 4 January 2011
MarketPLACE Pavillion- Development.
Design Brief:
The aim of the market place is to provide a new vibrant quarter for Dundee with a sense of Community and Character
The market will be a visible, open space so that the community can see the daily events and feel invited towards it.
The market will introduce a stronger connection to the river and the riverside walk. It will enrich this area and also enhance the proposed V&A project which is adjacent.
The amenities will provide a unique and attractive place which Dundee does not Currently have.
Dundee's main thoroughfare currently consists of sterile, un-friendly chain stores.
The marketplace will provide a unique experience for dundee of quality fresh foods & services and an area where outdoor/street events can take place, this will provide a hub of activity beside the V&A which will open up the waterfront which is currently segregated from the Dundee centre.
Moore St. Dublin-Precedence
The fact of the site is that it is essentially a pedestrian area but it is completely segregated from the town centre and the real pedestrian vista's by a very busy dual carrigeway road.
How do i create a marriage between pedestrian and vehicular traffic?By creating an outdoor cinema it will change the ideals of the car from an A-B, busy lifestyle, time saving machine back to a social machine, by re-creating those scenes from old classic movies of people socialising at outdoor cinemas etc. The idea is to romanticise car use.
This will also serve as the dual use option and the covered area which includes bar's, cafe;s etc. will be a social meeting place before and after screenings. The stage for the screen may also be used during the day time for theatre and other events.
